U12— First day out, we played Cappoquinn, winning 3-0 after a stunning Paudie McMahon goal. All round from Alan Barry in goals to all the subs that came on it was a good performance. On match day two, going down to Ballymacarbarry to play Pinewood and to lose 2-1 was hard because we could have won it. This was followed by another two defeats to Lismore and An Gaeltach, with two early goals in the Gaeltach game being decisive. We hit the post twice, had a goal disallowed wrongly and a few outstanding saves from Gaeltach ‘keeper keeping us at bay.
U14— Our first match was under lights against Cappoquinn on a Wednesday night which ended up as a nil all draw. Both teams could have won it, but the fair result was a draw. We then traveled to Ballymacarbarry to play Pinewood, winning 3-2. Two converted penalties and a Gavin McCarty goal gave us that win. Then came Lismore at home, winning quite comfortably against a weak Lismore team. Rob Cullinane (4) Liam O Driscoll and David Connoughton (3) Tony Motherway, Gavin McCarthy and ???? With a goal each. We then traveled to An Gaeltach, losing on a 2-4 defecate, with the Gaeltach getting an early and late goal to settle the match. Goals from David Connoughton and John wasn't enough to overcome there resilient defense. Next came Castlebridge at home drawing 1-1 with Gavin Mc Carthy scoring early and a goal for Castlebridge in the 2nd half. Both teams could have won it but a 1-1 score line was to be. Next came Ardmore away with a few players missing but we still won by 2 goals on a score line 5-3. After that we came up against a very good Brideview team who beat us 6-0 at home. We didn’t perform and a few individual mistakes in the 1st half proved crucial. All six were scored in that half and we tried to come back in the second to no avail. We then took on Valley Rangers of Conna away. The defense stood firm in the 1st half with a new 3-5-2 formation. 0-0 at half time we upped the attack and Jack Barry who came outfield for the 2nd half slotted in after an assist from Liam O Driscoll. Then came the second goal, a combination of Donough O Flynn and Tony Motherway who was operating at midfield saw the ball hit the net for a second time. Both claim the goal so they get a half goal each!
Our last match was against Cappoquinn in Clashmore in the cup. We started without our keeper and centre mid Liam. It was wet and slippy but we started off good attacking well. Rob Cullinane and Ken Hegarty could have a goal each before David Conoughton scored a free kick after Donough O Flynn got fouled at the edge of the area. Ten minutes later Liam O Driscoll parried the ball after a shot but it was tapped in from close range. The score stayed the same for the whole game with shots from David, Ken, Rob and Gavin being well saved by the Cappoquinn keeper. Into extra time and again Ken volleyed well but put it over the bar from 12 yards out. Tony Motherway and Darren Mc Carthy played well at the back with Donough and David were strong in mid field. The extra time played out and it went into penalties. Our first two penalties were missed but Liam held out there's. Liam, Tony, Gavin and Robert scored but we missed our final one and they scored. It was a great game by both sides but there could be only one winner!
U15— This was the first time this squad and manager had entered the National Cup, so all was an experience and learning curb for the future. We first came up against a strong Fermoy side, winning 1-0. A deflected Seani Fein shot on the 20 minute mark settle the match. When Fermoy started to pile on the pressure, the defense stood firm, with some fine saves from Alan Hayes and last ditch tackles from Donough O Flynn being crucial. This was a great win, especially playing away from home. Next came Greenwood from Togher, a Premier Division side with an U15 Ireland International in their ranks. It got off to a bad start with Greenwoods Irish International breaking free and placing the ball into the bottom right hand corner, just out of the reach of Alan Hayes. Then popped up Liam O Driscoll from a 25th minute Seani Fein free, that was fumbled by the ‘keeper, to tap into an open net. 10minutes into the second half, a well worked Greenwood goal again put them on top. As we piled on the pressure we couldn’t break the Greenwood defense for a second time. Late in the match another Greenwood goal, killed us off. It ended up 1-3, but we held our heads up high.
U16- First day out, we played Valley in Conna, with this being our first match with this group of players in 2 years. 20 minutes in our first goal came with Bud putting the ball past the Valley ‘keeper. 5 minutes later James Cullinane was brought down in the box, with William Joyce putting the penalty in. Then late in the half Bud from a William free, poked the ball past the ‘keeper once again. After half time Seani Fein latched onto a saved James Cullinane shot, blasted the ball home from close range. Then with the introduction of a few subs, James Cullinane finally got a well deserved goal. All round the pitch from John Bailey to Ciaran Curtain it was a well deserved victory, winning 5-0. Next up was a highly fancied Clashmore at home. Goals from a James Cullinane pounce and a William Joyce drive were enough to win the game 2-0. This was an excellent result as Clashmore are title contenders. Next we played An Gaeltach away in Ardmore beating them 1-0 with a Mark Hayes goal. Then we beat Brideview 3-0 with two goals set up by John Bailey for Colm Porter and a Sean Meredith goal. Next we went down to Ballymacarberry to play Pinewood. We were missing 5 players who would have all been starting, two U14’s had to be called up as a result. The half went off to a good start as we pressed and eventually got rewarded with James Cullinane getting fouled in the box. Mark Hayes slotted the penalty down the middle. Good work from a number of players including Fergal Duffy, Liam O Driscoll and Sean Meredith but then Pinewood scored in a controversial manner. Our stand in keeper John Bailey shouted “Leave It” and a in-direct free kick was awarded on the six yard box inside the area. Pinewood smashed the ball into the roof of the net in dubious circumstances. At half time we made two substitutions and we tried to go out and win. A number of bad tackles went in from Pinewood and was in danger of turning bad. Four yellows were handed out to Pinewood and one to us. Finally we were rewarded a goal after a long throw from Donough O Flynn to James Cullinane who volleyed the ball past the keeper. Then the worst tackle of the game was given to Sean Meredith by Pinewoods No. 11 and the Pinewood player was given a red card. The game played on with still some heavy tackling but we were on top the whole game so we fully deserved the win. The final game we played Cappoquinn away under lights and won our crown as League Champions by drawing 2-2! Well done to all!
Our last game of the season was away to Cappoquinn last Wednesday night the 27th under lights. We started well with William winning the toss and James and Brian looking fresh and lively up front. Soon the home side got a grip on the game and put us under severe pressure down the left but with Liam and Colm coping well. We finally broke the dead lock just before half time with a good finish through the keeper's legs by Brian Hartnett. John Barry replaced Liam Higgins at half time and we were set to drive on from there. They started positively and equalized within 10 minutes of the restart. We reacted well and within a few minutes and William grabbed Ballybridge the lead again with a sweetly struck goal into the far top corner from a placed ball from Mark Hayes. It was too and fro from there on and Cappoquinn leveled for the second time which looked to be offside but with a very dubious refereeing decision, the goal stood. John Bailey and Mickey Ho replaced Sean Meredith and Colm Porter and the replacements made a good impact. Barry and T.J were rock solid at the back. Brian Hartnett was badly fouled, with the opposition player only receiving a yellow card and Patrick Quinn replaced the tireless Bud. Fergal and Mark pressed well but to no avail, William and Mickey had a few half chances and with the referee becoming more and more familiar with his yellow card, affairs were getting heated and Ballybridge were thriving. The game came to an end and with a comfortable 2-2 draw, Ballybridge were crowned WWEC u16 league champions for 07/08.Well done to all the lads who showed top class talent all through the campaign and got their well deserved reward of the league triumph! |
